35.   Samuel PETHERAM (Richard 3, James 2, Robert 1) was born
June 16, 1839 in Lympsham, Somerset Co., England, and died
March 10, 1896 in Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County. He
married Melissa RYERSE January 07, 1865 in Woodhouse
        Township, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.   Wittnessed by {W.}
        S. Griffin and David _?_. Married by N. Willou, daughter of
Robert RYERSE and Eliza UNDERHILL. She was born June 14,
1844 in Port Ryerse, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, and died
April 15, 1899 in Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.

Notes for Samuel PETHERAM:  Samuel was residing in Rockford, Ontario, Canada when he married Melissa Ryerse. Witness to their marriage; [W.]S. Griffin and David ------.

In Sam's obituary it was stated he came to Michigan when he was 27. So most likely this was in the year 1866. Sam and Melissa lived next to his sister Eliza Jane Souter and was listed as a farmer in the 1870
census.

On three birth records of his children, Sam was listed as a Shoemaker. Samuel and Melissa lived on Market Street in Holland City, Michigan then later moved to Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan. They were living with their daughter and her family who resided in Saugatuck.

Samuel and Melissa had at least ten children of which only our Erie Alice survived to carry on the descendancy.

More About Samuel PETHERAM:
Baptism: St. Christopher's Church, Lympsham
Burial: Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.
Occupation: Shoemaker 2

Notes for Melissa RYERSE:
Melissa reportedly met Samuel when he was fitting her and her brother for boots. It is believed they came to Michigan about 1866.

Melissa must have helped care for her first grandchild Lurah Melissa as she was living with Erie and David when Lurah was born in September of 1898. How precious that time was to be especially since Melissa had lost so many other babies over the years. Then tragedy.
In April of 1899 Melissa fell down the stairs while living at her daughter, Erie Alice Reed's home in Saugatuck, Michigan. Per Melissa's obituary she never recovered and died of a fractured skull. Melissa was 55 years old.

More About Melissa RYERSE:
Burial: Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.
Occupation: Housekeeper 3

Children of Samuel Petheram and Melissa Ryerse are:

58    i.    Alice May PETHERAM, born September 29, 1865 in
Rockford, Ontario, Canada; died September 29, 1865 in
                 Rockford, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for Alice May PETHERAM:
This Alice May might be the same Alice as the second born? But I did find a Michigan death record for an Alice May Petheram who died 20th July of 1870 of Diphtheria. The record has the father listed as Samuel "Petherton" and mother as Eliza Jane "Petherton. Samuel had a sister by the name of Eliza Jane. It is ossible that Eliza helped in the reporting of the death of this child.

59    ii.    Alice May PETHERAM, born possibly, November 1866 in
Rockford, Ontario, Canada; died July 20, 1870 in Holland,
                  Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for Alice May PETHERAM:
Alice May died when she was three years old of Diphtheria per Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan death records. But on 1870 census Alice was 6 years old. One of the ages is probably in error or were there two children named Alice May? Alice could have been born in Canada, and not Holland, Michigan as listed on the death record. Alice was on the 1870 census which leads me to believe she was ill when census was taken and dying as it was being recorded. On 1870 death record parents are listed as Samuel "Petherton" and Eliza Jane
"Petherton." Eliza Jane is Samuel's sister and lived next door. It is possible that Eliza Jane could have helped in reporting this child's death.

60    iii.    Arthur Edmond PETHERAM, born August 21, 1867 in
Rockford, Ontario, Canada; died November 19, 1878 in
                   Holland City, Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for Arthur Edmond PETHERAM: Arthur E. (may
stand for Edmond as this name appeared on 1870 census as
Edmin) Edmond was probably born in Rockford, Norfolk
County, Canada. Arthur Edmond died at 11 years, 2 mos.,
29 days old of Typhoid. His mom and dad on the death
record are Samuel and Melissa "Petherton."

61    iv.    John PETHERAM (twin), born May 11, 1870 in Holland,
                   Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for John PETHERAM (twin):
I will be checking to see if there is a grave site for this twin in Ottawa or Allegan County, Michigan. No sex listed and no name given on birth record. Family provided information that the twins were boys.

I found the twins on the 1870 Ottawa County, census with John being listed first. John must have died prior to 1880 Ottawa County Census as he is not listed in the census with Samuel and Melissa.

62    v.    Jacob PETHERAM (twin), born May 11, 1870 in Holland,
                  Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for Jacob PETHERAM (twin):
I will be checking to see if there is a grave site for this twin in Ottawa or Allegan County, Michigan. No sex and no name listed on birth record. Samuel was listed as a farmer and both Samuel and Melissa had birth places listed as unknown. Family provided information that the twins were boys. Found Jacob on 1870 Ottawa County, Michigan census record. Older twin John listed first? Died before 1880 as Jacob is not on the 1880 Census of Ottawa County with Samuel and Melissa.

63    vi.    Mary PETHERAM, born July 13, 1871 in Holland, Ottawa
                   County, Michigan.

Notes for Mary PETHERAM:
Samuel is listed as a shoemaker and both Samuel and Melissa are recorded as Canadian. Have to check death records to see when this baby died. Mary is not on the 1880 Census in Ottawa County with Samuel and Melissa.

+ 64    vii.    Erie Alice PETHERAM, born July 11, 1874 in Holland
City, Michigan, Ottawa County; died December 18, 1942
                     in Saginaw, Michigan, Saginaw County.

65    viii.   Male PETHERAM, born December 23, 1877 in
Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan; died December
23, 1877 in Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan.

Notes for Male PETHERAM:
Baby Petheram was listed as stillborn on birth record.

66    ix.     Nellie May PETHERAM, born May 02, 1879 in Holland,
                     Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for Nellie May PETHERAM:
I will have to try and find a death record or grave site for Nellie May, on Nellie's birth record, Samuel is listed as a shoemaker and place of birth England. Melissa's place of birth, Canada. Nellie May is not listed on the 1880 Census record with Samuel and Melissa.

    67    x.    Minnie M. PETHERAM, born April 1881 in Saugatuck ?;
died November 17, 1903 in Saugatuck, Allegan County,
                   Michigan.

Notes for Minnie M. PETHERAM:
I will need to check for a grave site probably in Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan for Minnie. On the 1900 Allegan Co. Census, Minnie is living with her brother-in-law David and sister Erie Alice Reed and was 19 years old, single, no occupation listed. Her mother, Melissa Ryerse Petheram had died in 1899 at David and Erie's house when she fell down the stairs and fractured her skull. Minnie died from an abscess per death records. Under employment Minnie was listed as incompetent.

68    xi.     Child of "PETHEM", born unknown date; died April 20,
1880 in Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan.

Notes for Child of "PETHEM":
I do not know who this child is for sure. Listed as parents are Mr. Petham and Louisa Petham. Did Melissa have a middle name or did the recording clerk hear the name incorrectly?

36.   Eliza Jane PETHERAM (Richard 3, James 2, Robert 1) was born
January 02, 1841 in Lympsham, Somerset County, England, and
died December 24, 1909 in Holland Township, Ottawa County,
Michigan. She married George Harley SOUTER September 16,
1862 in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. He was born December
24, 1839 in Wingfield, Suffolk County, England.

Notes for Eliza Jane PETHERAM:
Eliza Jane was called "Jennie" by family. Her brother Samuel lived next door to Jennie in Holland with his wife Melissa Ryerse and family in 1870 per census information. Samuel was a witness at his sister's marriage in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.

64.   Erie Alice PETHERAM (Samuel 4, Richard 3, James 2, Robert 1)
was born July 11, 1874 in Holland City, Michigan, Ottawa County,
and died December 18, 1942 in Saginaw. Michigan, Saginaw
County. She married David Samuel REED 1893 in Saugatuck,
Allegan County, Michigan. David was the son of Samuel REED
(REID) and Ann B. CULVER/COLLVER INGRAM. He was born
March 01, 1872 in Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan, (per
family), and died August 03, 1939 in Saginaw, Michigan, Saginaw
        County.

Notes for Erie Alice PETHERAM:
Erie died in her sleep while living with her daughter Lurah and son-in-law John Neymeiyer in Golfside, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan. Erie's mom Melissa named her daughter Erie, most likely after her sister. Granddaughter Norma referred to her Grandma as "Little Grandma." And Granddaughter Alice remembered Grandma Reed as having hair way down past her bottom.

Erie was a member of the Saugatuck M.E. Church and its Ladies Aid Society and of the Saugatuck Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. On Erie's birth record she is listed as a "male." Vol. 2, pg. 139, Ottawa County, Michigan.

More About Erie Alice PETHERAM:
Burial: Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.

Notes for David Samuel REED:
David was a member of the Methodist Church in Saugatuck and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Saugatuck also. As the years had gone by and the automobile became the main mode of transportation, the old Blacksmith's trade and the buggy shop that David's father Samuel had started in Saugatuck, went by the wayside. David had learned the trade from his father and helped run S. C. Reed & Sons until times became just too difficult to keep the shop in business. David's brother Roger also worked in the shop in his younger days.

In 1930 David and Erie lived on South Thayer Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their son, David, "Buster" had written them and this postcard has the address on Thayer Street in Ann Arbor. David may have worked for the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, after closing down the blacksmith and buggy shop, as his brother Roger was also there at this time working in Security.

In 1938 Erie and David were living at 1717 S. Bates in Saginaw, Michigan. At the time of David's death in August of 1939, he and Erie were at the home of his daughter Lurah Reed Neymeiyer.

At grave sites is written:

"DEAR PARENT THO WE MISS YOU NOW YOU REST WITH GOD"

82.   Lurah Melissa REED (Erie Alice 5 PETHERAM, Samuel 4,
        Richard 3, James 2, Robert 1) was born September 17, 1898 in
Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County, and died July 23, 1965 in
Iosco County, East Tawas, Michigan. She married John, (Jan
        NIEMEYER/NIJMEIJER) NEYMEIYER September 27, 1920 in
Grand Rapids, MIichigan, Kent County, by a Justice of the Peace.
John was the son of Albert NIEMEYER/NIJMEIJER and Jantien
"Jennie" BLANKE. He was born March 13, 1891 in Grand
Rapids., Michigan, Kent County, and died December 07, 1956 in
        Saginaw, Michigan, Saginaw County.

Notes for Lurah Melissa REED:
Lurah was named after her grandmother, Melissa (Ryerse) Petheram and after her Dad's brother's wife, Roger E., who was named, Lurah (JAMES) REED.  {Lurah (JAMES) REED was only 26 when she died of Consumption in 1893.}

Our Lurah was listed as a saleslady on her marriage license and told her granddaughter Barbara she was married in a navy blue suit. Grandma's wishes were that her name be passed along in the family. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Second Presbyterian Church in Saginaw Township, Saginaw, Michigan.

Grandma and Grandpa met while both participating in Vaudeville. Grandpa played piano and also sang with his church as a young man in Grand Rapids Michigan. He learned the trade of Cabinetmaking after leaving school when he was 14 years old.

My family lived in a smaller home on the farm on Stroebel Road, next door to Grandma and Grandpa for many years. After Grandpa had died we eventually moved into the farm house with grandma and lived with her until about 1963. Gram was special to us as she had helped to care for us when our mom became ill. A bright and resourceful true lady who I remember learning so much from. She was meticulous about the proper way to do things. From going out to the chicken coop, picking out a hen for dinner, including plucking feathers from that hen to managing her business affairs. I fondly recall Gram on her knees digging up tulip bulbs to separate and replant around the large oval driveway at the farm. It must have been her Dutch Heritage!

Baptism: June 06, 1926, Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church, Saginaw County, Michigan.
Burial: Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum

Notes for John (Jan NIEMEYER) NEYMEIYER:  No middle name given by parents.
Served in W.W. I American Expeditionary Forces, 339th Infantry MG Co. and was a Disabled American Veteran having been awarded The Purple Heart.

John and Lurah left Grand Rapids moving to Owosso then to Saginaw in 1923 when he was hand picked to manage Saginaw Furniture Company, the main headquarters being in Chicago, Illinois. He helped to design, fine handcrafted furniture rich with carvings and hand decorated with flowers, gold leaf and mahogany wood and veneers. Classic furniture now.

John designed and built his home in Golfside before purchasing his "Gentleman's Dairy" farm in James Township, Saginaw County. He first founded Oil Well Service, Inc., and then John Neymeiyer Oil Company. He was an Honorary Member of the Smithsonian Institute of Arts and member of The Furniture Club of America.

Memories of Grandpa coming home from work, always dressed in a suit, vest and tie with a hat. He was a dynamic businessman, managing his furniture plant and when W.W. II arrived he geared this plant to fight in the War effort. He bought and traded for property obtaining mineral rights and proceeded to drill and even "hit" that rich black vein of oil on occasion. We could tell when this happened because when he drove into the driveway his car had quite an oil smell. Investing for his children and grandchildren's future was the ultimate as I, his granddaughter Barbara and my brother Gary traced his business dealings in Oil & Gas ventures all across Michigan. Grandpa bought cottages for his children and their children to enjoy. His most beloved purchases were the cabin cruisers he owned. First. a 46 foot Chris Craft and then a few years later a 53 foot Chris Craft. Both boats were named after his wife and were called, "Lurah M."

Notes for Alice May NEYMEIYER:
Alice May was named after her Grandmother Erie Alice Petheram Reed and Erie Alice's sister Alice May. Grandma Neymeiyer told me it was a family name.

Howard, "Tommie" and Alice met in Washington D.C. in Layfayette Park across the street from the White House. It was the day before W.W. II was officialy announced the U.S. had won the war. But many in D.C. knew before the official announcement and had gathered in Layfayette Park to share in the joy. Dad got mom's phone number from her roommate because at the time mom would not even acknowledge dad's exsistence. Dad carried that phone number in his wallet until the day he died. Mom was working in the Pentagon as a Secretary and dad was healing from the last surgery on his left arm from wounds received in the South Pacific. He also was recovering from Malaria. They lived in New York after they married, then back to Michigan when mom discovered she was going to have a baby. She had not wanted to bring up a child in the atmosphere of New York City and young aspiring actors. Dad was working at the Post Office in New York City, had a portfolio of professional photographs made, and was working as a stand in for Rock Hudson. But with a new baby on the way, New York was left behind and mom and dad returned to Michigan to raise their family.

And....A very special thank you to Roy Allen and his lovely wife Elizabeth, who is a Petheram descendant, of Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada  and Roy's wonderful book; "A History Remembered The Petherams of Somerset, England and Norfolk, Canada," published 1989.

If Roy had not married a Petheram gal I might still be looking for where my Petherams originated.
