THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL CALEB REED and ANN B. CULVER/COLLVER INGRAM REED OF ALLEGAN CO., SAUGATUCK & DOUGLAS, MICHIGAN

Samuel may be the son of Robert and Mary (TEAL) REED/REID of Lyndoch, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada

This is a work in progress and I have not been able to prove up Samuel's parents. Ann B. Culver's parents were Oliva Wilson and James Culver of Townsend I believe.

1.  ROBERT1 REED was born Unknown in Ireland.  He married MARY TEAL Abt. 1846.  She was born Unknown in Canada/England.

Notes for ROBERT REED:

Samuel states on almost all of the census information that his father was born in Ireland and his mom was born in either Canada or England. Samuel was born in Lynedoch, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada from his obituary. So we can assume his parents lived there. This has to be proven up this is Samuel's father and that Robert was married to Mary Teal.

In the marriage record for Samuel's second marriage to Laura Lamont, Samuel's parent are named as Robert Reed and Mary Teal.

Marriage Record, Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan

Book 7, page 221: 15 Oct 1912 in Saugatuck — Samuel C. Reed, 64, res Saugatuck, born Canada, blacksmith, father Robert Reed, mother Mary Teal, 1 previous; Laura C. Lamont (born Kopp), 44, res Saugatuck, born Bloomingdale, MI, domestic, father Ferdinand Kopp, mother Katherine Sable, 1 previous; md by Rev. A. H. Lash, pastor of Cong’l Church, witnesses A. E. Lampen and B. G. Hills both of Saugatuck

Notes for MARY TEAL:

Samuel lists his mom as being English on the census records. Found In Ancestor File from LDS, Film #1985374 that Samuel's mother was Mary Seal. I have to prove this is Samuel's mother. I do not know where the source for the Ancestor file information was obtained. But clearly on Sam'l's marriage record to Laura he states his mom's name as Mary Teal.

Children of ROBERT REED and MARY TEAL are:

2.               i. SAMUEL CALEB2 REED, b. March 16, 1848, Lynedoch, Norfolk Co., Ontario, CAN; d. February 19, 1923, Saugatuck, MI., Allegan Co..

3.              ii. DAVID A. REED, b. September 10, 1854, Lynedoch, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada.

Generation No. 2

2.  SAMUEL CALEB2 REED (ROBERT1) was born March 16, 1848 in Lynedoch, Norfolk Co., Ontario, CAN, and died February 19, 1923 in Saugatuck, MI., Allegan Co.  He married (1) ANN BARTHOLOMEW CULVER 1867 (but not confirmed that they were ever legally married). daughter of JAMES CULVER and Olivia WILSON.  She was born August 25, 1843 in Townsend, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada, and died January 04, 1911 in Saugatuck, MI., Allegan Co.  He married (2) LAURA

L. LA MONT October 15, 1912 in Saugatuck, Allegan Co., MI1.  She died November 13, 1918 in Saugatuck, Allegan Co., MI.

Notes for SAMUEL CALEB REED:

Samuel owned a business in Saugatuck, Michigan, S. C. Reed & Sons. Samuel was a blacksmith and sold buggies. He was also active in civic, and religious affairs for fifty years in Saugatuck & Douglas, Michigan per his obituary information. He had been a village official, past president of the Village of Saugatuck in 1897-98. And he was one of the Trustees of the M. E. Church. Samuel was also a member of Saugatuck Lodge F. & A.M. and of the Eastern Star.

Advertisement on July 21, 1899 from Lakeshore Commercial:

      S. C. Reed and Sons have just added some new buggies to their stock. Call and examine them if you contemplate purchasing.   You can do as well with them as anywhere.

***

Samuel had worked at a Blacksmith shop in Canada and from information passed down in the family, he had fallen in love with the owner's wife. It is unclear if his love, Anna had ever gotten a divorce from her husband. Family had been told the two fled Canada because there had been "some trouble."  I have not found a marriage record for them in Canada or in Michigan but I have confirmed from obituary information that their child, Roger was born in Lynedoch, Ontario, Canada and the youngest son David was born in Michigan. Census information indicates that Roger the oldest son was born in Canada and David was born in Michigan. I am also unsure if the spelling of Reed was previously Reid, or if there were name changes. The marriage to his second wife, Laura LaMont names his father as Robert Reed and his mother as Mary Teal. From his obituary we learned he went blind the last few years of his life.

There are two Samuel Reed's in the 1870 census and I am not sure if one or the other could be Samuel. In the early history and biographies of Samuel he indicated he came to Michigan in 1867 and in other accounts he was living in Douglas first. I have been unable to find Ann and young Roger in a census in Michigan in 1870 either.

Notes for ANN BARTHOLOMEW CULVER:

From death record - Anna was 67 years, 4 Mos., 9 days per her death certificate. Death due to Myocarditis. Anna's parents named were Oliva Wilson and James Culver. Confirmed this on 1851 Townsend, Norfolk Co., Ontario census.  Ann had a sister, Sarah born in 1846.

Ann was married to Mr. Edward Ingram while she became involved with Samuel. From family, Ann and Samuel fled Canada for Michigan and it appears that Anna did not divorce Mr. Ingram. When Edward died in 1874, attorneys in Ontario were trying to locate Ann so that she could sign off of the property that would have gone to her upon the death of her "legal" husband. Evidently, through Ann's mother, messages must have reached Ann and she instructed the attorneys that papers were to be sent to her mother O. Wilson, in Middleton, Ontario.

On 1880 Allegan Co., Michigan census, Ann's daughter, is Alice Ingrahm, 18 (born 1862), in Canada. Samuel lists Alice as his stepdaughter.

In 1900 Allegan Co., census Ann & Sam's adopted daughter is Mae, 28 years. old, born in May 1870 and also under her care her grandchild Georgia born in June 1891.

Notes for LAURA L. LA MONT:

Samuel married Laura after Ann died. Laura had four children that I am aware of; Ione, Ed, Max and Emma La Mont. Samuel also bought a cemetery lot for Laura's daughter; Emma F. LaMont who died Nov 23, 1918 by suicide. She is in Block 03 Range 015 Lot 003 Grave 3, next to her mom in the Reed plot. It looks like Emma might have died just 10 days after her mom had passed away.

Roger E. Reed -- The spirit of progress which has been a dominant

factor in the settlement and development of Michigan finds a worthy repre-

sentative in Roger E. Reed, who is living in the village of Saugatuck.

Born in Canada, his natal day was June 4, 1868, and in 1870 his

parents came to Allegan county, settling in Saugatuck. He is a son of

Samuel C. and A. B. (Culver) Reed, who were likewise natives of Canada,

the former born in March, 1848. In 1870 they came to Saugatuck, since

which time the father has followed his trade of blacksmithing in the village.

He has likewise extended the field of his activity by dealing in agricultural

implements, buggies, wagons and harness, and is accounted one of the alert

and enterprising residents of the town. His fellow citizens, recognizing his

ability and worth, have conferred upon him various positions of public

honor and trust. He served for two years as president of the village and

trustee for five years, and whether in office or out of it his co-operation can

always be counted upon to further any movement that he deems will prove

of benefit to the general public. He and his wife are members of the Meth-

odist Episcopal church, with which they have been connected for twenty-

three years, and in which Mr. Reed has served as steward and trustee. He

likewise belongs to Saugatuck Lodge No. 328, F. & A. M., of which he is

the present secretary. The family numbers two sons, Roger E. and David

S., and the father was also one of two sons, his brother being David A.

Reed. They were the children of Robert and Mary Reed, the former of

Irish parentage and the latter of English descent.

Reared and educated in the village of Saugatuck, Roger E. Reed

leaned the blacksmith's trade under the direction of his father, who was

a skilled workman, so that he soon became an expert at the anvil. He fol-

lowed that pursuit for five years but at length abandoned the forge, an{d}

in 1885 became identified with E. E. Weed & Co., proprietors of a fruit

package factory. He spent eighteen years in that establishment and for

five years of the time was a member of the firm. During these latter years

he invented and perfected a machine, on which bushel and half bushel bas-

kets were made. These machines were patented in 1903, at about the time

that Mr. Reed severed his connection with the company and took up

present line of business. He is conducting one of the largest livery stables

in the county and has recently erected a new and commodious cement build-

ing for this purpose, thirty-six by one hundred feet. He keeps twenty-four

horses, high spirited animals which are in good condition, and he has

thirty-two vehicles of various styles and uses, including some of the most

modern design. His livery barn receives a liberal patronage, owing to his

reasonable prices and his earnest desire to please his customers. He is

likewise identified with mercantile interests of the village, and since 1903

he had conducted the transfer line. As a merchant he deals in various

commodities, including coal, wood, hay, straw, salt, roofing, line, cement,

sewer pipe and wood fiber plaster, for which he finds a ready and profit-

able sale.

October 31, 1898, Mr. Reed was happily married to Miss Josephine

Simonson, a daughter of Simon and Marie Simonson, and a native of Saug-

atuck, where her entire life as been passed. They now have an interesting

little daughter, Kari N. (Natalie) Mr. Reed served as deputy marshal of the village

of Saugatuck for some time but prefers to concentrate his energies upon

his business interests, which are growing in volume and importance. He is

a worthy member of Saugatuck Lodge No. 328, F. & A. M., and is well

known in the village and this part of the county, where almost his entire

life has passed, and that his stanchest friends are among those who

have known him from his boyhood is an indication that his life record has

been at all times commendable, displaying sterling traits of manhood.

I think this is Roger living in Ann Arbor in 1930. He states he is widowed but per his death certificate he was divorced when he died. In this census he states in was born in Michigan when prior to this census he always stated he was born in Canada. And this age is off by quite a few years. He should be around 61 years old. This is the only Roger I have been able to find in Ann Arbor area. Roger did lose his first wife Lurah James a short time after they were married. They married in 1888 and she died in 1893. Roger ended up buried next to Lurah in Saugatuck, Riverside Cemetery. I also am trying to prove up that he had a daughter by his first wife Lurah. Georgia Reed was living with her grandparents Sam and Ann in the 1900 census. Georgia was born in 1891 per this census. She would have been just about 2 years old when Lurah died and it makes sense that Roger might not have been able to take care of her all until he remarried to Josephine. Roger married Josephine in about 1898, so Georgia by then would be near eight years

old. It may have been very difficult for Samuel, Ann and Georgia to just have her go off to live with her father and new step-mother at this time.

Another article mentioning the Reed's in Saugatuck is on page 387, but I do not have the name of the book it was published in.

Excerpt - "The last livery operator in town was Roger Reed who purchased the old "Union Hotel" property from William Rencha, who had bought and demolished that structure in 1903. Reed erected a large cement block building in 1904 which stands today as the Saugatuck Village barn. Rencha had retained a portion of the large hotel stable which for a dozen years stood just to the north on the block structure. Reed was a son of Sam Reed, a blacksmith, who with another son, Dave, conducted a smithy business on Culver Street. Roger Reed was in the feed and grain business, as well as being a liveryman, and also at one period was the operator of the stage line to Allegan. The livery was an "exchange stable" which meant that one could rent a horse with buggy at a location, say Otsego, drive to Saugatuck, where he could pick up a new rig, and leave for Holland. The Otsego rig would be eventually returned to its owner when a new customer bound for Otsego came along in the manner of the present day trailer rental service. By 1910, the big news in transportation was the automobile and the handwriting on the wall was for stable owners. Reed phased out the business completely by World War I and for a time attempted to establish a car repair shop. However, this did not prove successful and the building stood idle for a time. The next owner was the "Speedwell Company", a firm which manufactured rubber tired roller skates. Next it became the home of the American Twisting Company. In a few years that company moved to a new building. Reed has secured the position of village street commissioner and served in that capacity until he retired. One of his assistants, through many of his years, was Harry Newnham, who succeeded him and who by dedicated service, energy and personality came to be what might be called a Saugatuck legend.

Finally the Village of Saugatuck secured the old block building and converted it into the village barn and fire department."

ROGER REED DIES in MUSKEGON (Died April 20, 1946)

With the passing of Roger E. Reed his many friends in Saugatuck, associates of half a century feel they have lost a genial, trusted and true friend and his sudden death at the home of his devoted daughter, Natalie, in Muskegon was a sad shock to his nearest and dearest as well as to those who lived afar, for last fall he spent a day in the village calling on friends and seemed in the best of health, and was just the dame happy Roger.

He was born in Canada on June 4, 1868, the older son of Samuel C. and Anna Reed, and as a young lad he came first to Douglas where the father had a blacksmith shop, later moving his business to Saugatuck and Roger attended school here. There was one brother, David, who died a few years ago. For many years Roger conducted livery business in the horse and buggy days, then came the automobile and he sold the horses and ran a public garage, building the cement block building now owned by the village. For some time he acted as water commissioner and after a

residence in the two towns for 50 years, he went to Ann Arbor where for 15 years he was on the campus police force at the (University of kegon where he looked after his Michigan; from there going to Muskegon daughter's apartments.) I think this was printed in error and should read - University of Michigan, from there going to Muskegon where he looked after his daughter's apartments.

He was a life member of bother the Masonic and O.E.S. orders and of Saugatuck Methodist church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Georgia Goodkind of Miami and Mrs. Natalie Franckowiak and one sister, Mrs. May Plotts of Kalamazoo, one granddaughter, Theresa.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church which the family had attended many years; the body lying in state two hours preceding the funeral which was largely attended and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Paul Hinkamp. Miss Lenore Spencer played several of Roger's best loved hymns opening the service. He was laid to rest in the family plot in Riverside cemetery by pallbearers, James Brown, Harry Newnham, Carlton Simonson, Frank Flint, George Erickson and Jean Simonson.

The Bartlett's buried in Riverside Cemetery – Helen (James) Bartlett died before the 1920 census. We can see she owned and probably purchased all 3 lots. I am not sure of what relationship these other Bartlett's would be. I also wonder if the death date for George is right?

I believe this is Helen, (married James James first), then married a Bartlet after James died in 1877. We see Helen in the 1880 and 1900 census information. I think her first husband was James James from the 1870 census and she and James appear to be living with the Bartlett's who could be Helen's parents? Or is this an older sister of Helen’s? George Bartlett's wife may be Leaura? Although there is 20 yrs difference in their age, so it could be Leaura is a daughter of George’s. And I don't see where it lists her as his wife. James James, Helen and daughter Livia (probably Lurah) are there.

Livia 3 (probably Lurah) (b c 1867) female white Mich

Then I found a bit of a puzzle in 1880. I am sure that L. Helen Bartlett is most likely Helen James, and we know that James James has died in 1877, and Helen remarried a Bartlett. Her father probably is George Bartlett as seen in the 1870 census. Leora James (spelling is difficult) has a sister Florence and we see her listed as Florence James in the 1880 census, daughter of Helen and Cassins Bartlett.

Then in the 1900 census we see Hellen Bartlett has moved to Douglas, is a widow. She reported she had two children, one had died. This has to be Lurah's mom and her sister since Lurah died in 1793 leaving her mom with one child living. It appears Florence Court is married but I can't find another Court in the census and she is living with her mom without her spouse in this census.

I did note that Herman, Josephine's brother appears to be enumerated twice in the 1900 census. Once living with his sister on June 23rd in 1900 and once again earlier in June, living with his parents. Herman has the same month and year of birth so I do suspect this he was counted two times.

Josephine was 34 years old in 1910 per census, married only once, mother of one, Father born in Norway and Mother born in Norway. Not working outside of home. And Josephine is still with Roger living in Saugatuck in the 1920 census.

In the 1930 census, Josephine states she is a widow just as her former husband Roger had stated in the census, even though both ex-spouses were still living.

5.  DAVID SAMUEL3 REED (SAMUEL CALEB2, ROBERT1) was born March 01, 1872 in Saugatuck, Allegan Co., MI, and died August 03, 1939 in Saginaw, Saginaw Co. MI.  He married ERIE ALICE PETHERAM August 08, 1894 in Saugatuck, Allegan Co., MI11, daughter of SAMUEL PETHERAM and MELISSA RYERSE.  She was born July 11, 1874 in Holland City, Ottawa Co., MI, and died December 18, 1942 in Saginaw, Saginaw Co. MI.

Notes for DAVID SAMUEL REED:

Marriage Record, Saugatuck, Allegan Co., Michigan

Book 6, page 155: 8 Aug 1894 in Allegan — David S. Reed, 22, res Saugatuck, born Saugatuck, blacksmith, father Samuel C. Reed, mother Anna Culver; Alice Petheram, 20, res Saugatuck, born Canada, no occ, father Samuel Petheram, mother Elizabeth Ryarsy; md by J. A. Barnes, clergyman, witnesses Jas F. Davis and Mrs. Hattie Davis of Saugatuck. (Previous record was for James F. Davis, 23, butcher, and Hattie Hayward, 21; same day and place and minister, and their witnesses were David S. Reed and Mrs. Alice Reed of Saugatuck; probably a double wedding.)

David was a member of the Methodist Church in Saugatuck and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Saugatuck also. He was a past treasurer of Saugatuck Township in 1915-16. As the years had gone by and the automobile became the main mode of transportation, the old Blacksmith's trade and the buggy shop that David's father Samuel had started in Saugatuck, went by the wayside. David had learned the trade from his father and helped run S. C. Reed & Sons until times became just too difficult to keep the shop in business.

In 1930 David and Erie lived also on S. Thayer St. in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their son, David, "Buster" had written them and this postcard has the address on Thayer Street in Ann Arbor. He may have worked for the U of M as his brother Roger did in Security.

In 1938 Erie and David were living at 1717 S. Bates in Saginaw per the Saginaw City Directory. At the time of David's death in August of 1939, he and Erie were at the home of his daughter Lurah Reed Neymeiyer.

At gravesites in Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck, Michigan is written:

"DEAR PARENT THO WE MISS YOU NOW YOU REST WITH GOD"

He was born in Saugatuck March 1, 1872 to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Reed. For many years he was engaged in the

blacksmith business with his father.

Notes for ERIE ALICE PETHERAM:

The marriage record for Erie and David - Book 6, page 155:  8 Aug 1894 in Allegan Co., Michigan - David S. Reed, 22, res. Saugatuck, born Saugatuck, blacksmith, father Samuel C. Reed, mother Anna Culver; Alice Petheram, 20, res. Saugatuck, born Canada, no occ; father Samuel Petheram, mother Elizabeth Ryarsy; md by J.

It is interesting to note that Erie Alice gives her mom's name as Elizabeth Ryarsy (Ryerse) in her marriage record. Previously, up to this time I had no indication that her middle name was Elizabeth. I only had seen her name documented as Melissa Ryerse.

Erie died in her sleep while living with her daughter Lurah and son-in-law John Neymeiyer in Golfside, Saginaw, Saginaw Co., Michigan.  Erie's mom Melissa named her daughter Erie most likely after her sister.

Granddaughter Norma referred to her Grandma as "Little Grandma." And Granddaughter Alice remembered Grandma Reed as having hair way down past her bottom.

Erie was a member of the Saugatuck M. E. Church and its Ladies Aid Society and of the Saugatuck Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. On Erie's birth record she is listed as a "male." Vol. 2, pg. 139, Ottawa Co., Michigan.

Grandma's wishes were that her name be passed along in the family. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Second Presbyterian Church in Saginaw Township.

John: Served in WWI American Expeditionary Forces, 339th Infantry MG Co. He was a Disabled American Veteran having been awarded The Purple Heart. John and Lurah left Grand Rapids moving to Owosso then to Saginaw in 1923 when he was hand picked to manage Saginaw Furniture Shops. John designed and built his home in Golfside before purchasing his "Gentleman's Dariy" farm in James Twp., Saginaw Co. He founded John Neymeiyer Oil Co., was an Honorary Member of the Smithsonian Institute of Arts and member of The Furniture Club of America.
