He married Lurah Melissa REED, 27 Sep 1920, in Grand Rapids, MI., Kent Co. by a Justice of the Peace, born 17 Sep 1898, Saugatuck, MI Allegan Co., (daughter of David Samuel REED and Erie Alice PETHERAM) baptized 06 Jun 1926, Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church, Saginaw, died 23 Jul 1965, Iosco County, Tawas, Michigan, buried: Saginaw County, Saginaw, Michigan at Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum.

Lurah was named after her grandmother, Melissa (Ryerse) Petheram and after her Dad's brother's wife, Roger E. and Lurah (James) Reed. We believe. Lurah (James) Reed was only 26 when she died of Consumption in 1893. Lurah James Reed is buried in the Reed plot in Allegan County, Saugatuck, Michigan, near David and Erie Reed.

Lurah was listed as a saleslady on her marriage license and told her granddaughter Barbara she was married in a navy blue suit. Grandma's wishes were that her name be passed along in the family. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Second Presbyterian Church in Saginaw Township, Saginaw, Michigan.

John and Lurah left Grand Rapids moving to Owosso then to Saginaw in 1923 when he was hand picked to manage Saginaw Furniture Shops. John designed and built his home in Golfside before purchasing his "Gentleman's Dairy" farm in James Township, Saginaw County. He founded John Neymeiyer Oil Co., was an Honorary Member of the Smithsonian Institute of Arts and member of The Furniture Club of America.

Memories of Grandpa coming home from work, always dressed in a suit, vest and tie with a hat. He was a dynamic businessman, managing his furniture plant and when W.W. II arrived he geared this plant to fight in the War effort. He bought and traded for property obtaining mineral rights and proceeded to drill and even "hit" that rich black vein of oil on occasion. We could tell when this happened because when he drove into the driveway his car had quite an oil smell.

Investing for his children and grandchildren's future was the ultimate as I, his granddaughter Barbara and my brother Gary traced his business dealings in Oil & Gas ventures all across Michigan. Grandpa bought cottages for his children and their children to enjoy. His most beloved purchase were the boats he owned. First a 46 foot Chris Craft and then a few years later a 53 foot Chris Craft. Both boats were named after his wife and were called, Lurah M.

My family lived in a smaller home on the farm on Stroebel Road, next door to Grandma and Grandpa for many years. After Grandpa had died we eventually moved into the farm house with grandma and lived with her until about 1963. Gram was special to us as she had helped to care for us when our mom became ill. A bright and resourceful true lady who I remember learning so much from. She was meticulous about the proper way to do things. From going out to the chicken coop, picking out a hen for dinner, including plucking feathers from that hen to managing her business affairs. I fondly recall Gram on her knees digging up tulip bulbs to separate and replant around the large oval driveway at the farm. It must have been her Dutch Heritage!.

Alice May was named after her Grandmother Erie Alice and Erie Alice's sister Alice May. Grandma Neymeiyer had told me it was a family name.

Howard, "Tommie" and Alice met in Washington D.C. in Layfayette Park across the street from the White House. It was the day before WW II was announced the U.S. had won the war. But many in D.C. knew before hand. Dad got mom's phone number from her roommate. At the time mom would not give it to dad and mom did not even talk to him much. Mom was working in the Pentagon as a Secretary and dad was healing from the last surgery on his left arm from wounds received in the South Pacific. He also recovering from Malaria. They lived in New York after they married, then back to Michigan when mom discovered she was going to have a baby.
