Colonel Samuel Ryerse, My Ancestor

Most all of the early information on the RYERSE-RYERSON Family is from the research of Phyllis A. Ryerse and Thomas A. Ryerson and their book; "The Ryerse-Ryerson Family - 1574 - 1994." Published by T. A. Ryerson & Son for Ryerse - Ryerson Family Association. 1994.

Without the dedication of these two people and the assist of other family members, I would not have succeeded in finding all this wonderful information on my Ryerse family. I thank them for the help they gave me from the bottom of my heart.   Barbara Lynn Thomas Fitzmaurice.

Dover, Ontario, buried: Port Dover Cemetery.

Ninth Generation

41.   Melissa RYERSE, born 14 Jun 1844, Port Ryerse, Norfolk Co., Ontario,
Canada, occupation Housekeeper, died 15 Apr 1899, Saugatuck, Michigan,
Allegan County, buried: Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan
       County.

Melissa's reportedly met Samuel when he was fitting her and her brother for
boots. It is believed they came to Michigan about 1866.

Melissa married Samuel PETHERAM, 07 Jan 1865, in Woodhouse Twp.,
Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada. Witnessed by; W. S. Griffin and David _?_.
Married by N. Willou, born 16 Jun 1839, Lympsham, Somerset Co.,
England, (son of Richard PETHERAM and Eliza BAKER) occupation
Shoemaker, died 10 Mar 1896, Saugatuck, MI., Allegan Co., buried:
Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.

In April of 1899 Melissa fell down the stairs while living at her daughter's, Erie
Alice Reed's home in Saugatuck, Michigan. Per Melissa's obituary she never
recovered and died of a fractured skull. Melissa was 55 years old.

Melissa must have helped care for her first grandchild Lurah Melissa as she
was living with Erie and David when Lurah was born in September of 1898
. How precious that time was to be especially since Melissa had lost so many
other babies over the years. And then Melissa's tragic fall down the stairs
       leading to her death.

Samuel was residing in Rockford, Ontario when he married Melissa Ryerse.
In Sam' obituary it was stated he came to Michigan when he was 27. So
most likely this was in the year 1866. Sam and Melissa lived next to his
sister Eliza Jane Souter and was listed as a farmer in the 1870 census.

On three birth records of his children, Sam was listed as a Shoemaker.
Samuel and Melissa lived on Market Street, in Holland City, Michigan. Then
later moved to Saugatuck, Allegan County, Michigan. They were living with
their daughter and her family who resided in Saugatuck in their later years.

Samuel and Melissa had at least ten children of which only our Erie Alice
survived to carry on the descendancy.

    Children:
     46.  i    Alice May PETHERAM,
born 29 Sep 1865, Rockford, Ontario,
Canada, died 29 Sep 1865, Rockford, Ontario, Canada.

This Alice May might be the same Alice as the second born? But I did
find a death record for an Alice May Petheram who died 20 July in
1870 of Diphtheria. The record has the father listed as Samuel
"Petherton" and mother as Eliza Jane "Petherton." Samuel had a
sister by the name of Eliza Jane. Possible that Eliza helped in the
reporting of the death of this child.

     47.  ii    Alice May PETHERAM, born about Nov 1866, Rockford, Ontario,
Canada, died 20 Jul 1870, Holland, Ottawa Co., Michigan.

Alice May died when she was three years old of Diphtheria per Holland,
Ottawa Co., Michigan death records. But on 1870 census Alice was six
years old. One of the ages is probably in error or were there two
               children named Alice May?

Alice could have been born in Canada, not Holland, Michigan as listed
on the death record. Alice was on the 1870 census which leads me to
believe she was ill when census was taken and dying as it was being
recorded. On 1870 death record parents are listed as Samuel
"Petherton" and Eliza Jane "Petherton." Eliza Jane is Samuel's sister
and lived next door. May have helped in reporting.

    48.  iii   Arthur Edmond PETHERAM, born 21 Aug 1867, Rockford, Ontario,
Canada, died 19 Nov 1878, Holland City, Ottawa Co., Michigan.

Arthur E. (may stand for Edmond as this name appeared on 1870
census as Edmin) Edmond was probably born in Rockford, Norfolk Co.,
Canada. Arthur E. died at 11 years, 2 mos., 29 days old of Typhoid.
His mom and dad on the death record are Samuel and Melissa
              "Petherton."

   49.  iv   John PETHERAM (twin), born 11 May 1870, Holland, Ottawa Co.,
              Michigan.

I will be checking to see if there is a gravesite for this twin in Ottawa or
Allegan Co., Michigan. No sex listed and no name given on birth
record. Family provided information that the twins were boys. Found the
twins on the 1870 Ottawa Co., Michigan census with John being listed
first. John must have died prior to 1880 Ottawa Co. Census as he is not
listed in the Census with Samuel and Melissa.

   50.  v   Jacob PETHERAM (twin), born 11 May 1870, Holland, Ottawa Co.,
              Michigan.

And I will be checking to see if there is a grave site for this twin in
Ottawa or Allegan Co., Michigan. No sex and no name listed on birth
record. Samuel was listed as a farmer and both Samuel and Melissa
had birthplaces listed as unknown. Family provided information that the
twins were boys. Found Jacob on 1870 Ottawa Co., Michigan census
record. Older twin John listed first? Died before 1880 as Jacob is not on
the 1880 Census of Ottawa Co. with Samuel and Melissa.

   51.  vi   Mary PETHERAM, born 13 Jul 1871, Holland, Ottawa Co., Michigan.

Samuel listed as a shoemaker and both Samuel and Melissa are
recorded as Canadian. Have to check death records to see when this
baby died. Mary is not on the 1880 Census in Ottawa Co. with Samuel
              and Melissa.

+ 52.  vii  Erie Alice PETHERAM born 11 Jul 1874.

    53. viii  Male PETHERAM,
born 23 Dec 1877, Saugatuck, Allegan Co.,
Michigan, died 23 Dec 1877, Saugatuck, Allegan Co., Michigan.

Baby Petheram was listed as stillborn on birth record.

    54. ix   Nellie May PETHERAM, born 02 May 1879, Holland, Ottawa Co.,
                Michigan.

This will have to be checked further to try and find a death record or
gravesite for Nellie May. On Nellie's birth record, Samuel is listed as a
shoemaker and place of birth England., Melissa's place of birth,
Canada. Nellie May is not listed on the 1880 Census record with
                Samuel and Melissa.

    55. x    Minnie M. PETHERAM, born Apr 1881, Saugatuck?, died 17 Nov
                1903, Saugatuck, Allegan Co., Michigan.

Will need to check for a gravesite probably in Saugatuck, Allegan
County, Michigan for Minnie. On the 1900 Allegan Co. Census, Minnie
is living with her brother-in-law David and sister Erie Alice Reed and
was 19 yrs. old, single, no occupation listed. Her mother, Melissa
Ryerse Petheram had died in 1899 at David and Erie's house when she
fell down the stairs and fractured her skull. Minnie died from an
abscess per death records. Under employment Minnie was listed as
                incompetent.

    56. xi    Child of "PETHEM", born unknown, died 20 Apr 1880, Holland,
                Ottawa Co., Michigan.

I do not know who this child is for sure. Listed as parents are Mr.
Petham and Louisa Petham. Did Melissa have a middle name or did
the recording clerk hear the name incorrectly?.

Tenth Generation

52.   Erie Alice PETHERAM, born 11 Jul 1874, Holland City, Michigan, Ottawa
Co., died 18 Dec 1942, Saginaw. Michigan, Saginaw Co., buried: Riverside
        Cemetery, Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan County.

Erie died in her sleep while living with her daughter Lurah and son-in-law
John Neymeiyer in Golfside, Saginaw, Saginaw Co., Michigan. Erie's mom
Melissa named her daughter Erie most likely after her sister.

Granddaughter Norma referred to her Grandma as "Little Grandma." And
Granddaughter Alice remembered Grandma Reed as having hair way down
        past her bottom.

Erie was a member of the Saugatuck M.E. Church and its Ladies Aid
Society and of the Saugatuck Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. On Erie's
birth record she is listed as a "male." Vol. 2, pg. 139, Ottawa Co.

She married David Samuel REED, 1893, in Saugatuck, Allegan Co.,
Michigan, born 01 Mar 1872, Saugatuck, Allegan Co., MI, (son of Samuel
Caleb REED (REID) and Ann Bartholomew CULVER/COLLVER
INGRAM), died 03 Aug 1939, Saginaw, Michigan, Saginaw Co., buried:
Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck, Michigan, Allegan Co.
David was a member of the Methodist Church in Saugatuck and a member
of the Masonic Lodge in Saugatuck also. As the years had gone by and the
automobile became the main mode of transportation, the old Blacksmith's
trade and the buggy shop that David's father Samuel had started in
Saugatuck, went by the wayside. David had learned the trade from his father
and helped run S.C. Reed & Sons until times became just too difficult to
        keep the shop in business.

In 1930 David and Erie lived on S. Thayer Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Their son, David, "Buster" had written them and this postcard has the
address on Thayer Street in Ann Arbor. He may have worked for the
University of Michigan as his brother Roger did in Security.

In 1938 Erie and David were living at 1717 S. Bates in Saginaw, Michigan.
At the time of David's death in August of 1939, he and Erie were at the home
of his daughter Lurah Reed Neymeiyer.

At gravesites is written:

"DEAR PARENT THO WE MISS YOU NOW YOU REST WITH GOD"

Eleventh Generation

58.   Lurah Melissa REED, born 17 Sep 1898, Saugatuck, Michigan Allegan Co.,
died 23 Jul 1965, Iosco Co., East Tawas, MI, buried: Saginaw Co., Saginaw,
        Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum.

Lurah was named after her grandmother, Melissa (Ryerse) Petheram and
after her Dad's brother's wife, Roger E. and Lurah (James) Reed. We believe.
Lurah (James) Reed was only 26 when she died of Consumption in 1893.

Lurah was listed as a saleslady on her marriage license and told her
granddaughter Barbara she was married in a navy blue suit. Grandma's
wishes were that her name be passed along in the family. She was a
member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Second Presbyterian Church
        in Saginaw Township, Saginaw, Michigan.

My family lived in a smaller home on the farm on Stroebel Road, next door
to Grandma and Grandpa for many years. After Grandpa had died we
eventually moved into the farm house with grandma and lived with her until
about 1963. Gram was special to us as she had helped to care for us when
our mom became ill. A bright and resourceful true lady who I remember
learning so much from. She was meticulous about the proper way to do
things. From going out to the chicken coop, picking out a hen for dinner,
including plucking feathers from that hen to managing her business affairs.
I fondly recall Gram on her knees digging up tulip bulbs to separate and
replant around the large oval driveway at the farm. It must have been her
        Dutch Heritage!.

She married John (Jan NIEMEYER) NEYMEIYER, 27 Sep 1920, in Grand
Rapids, Michigan, Kent Co. by a Justice of the Peace, born 13 Mar 1891,
Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kent Co., (son of Albert (NIJMEIJER) NIEMEYER
and Jantien "Jennie" BLANKE) occupation Saginaw Furniture Company,
Manager in Saginaw, Michigan. John died 07 Dec 1956, Saginaw, Michigan,
Saginaw Co., buried: Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum, Saginaw, Michigan.

John served in W.W. I American Expeditionary Forces, 339th Infantry MG
Co. and was a Disabled American Veteran having been awarded The Purple
        Heart.

John and Lurah left Grand Rapids moving to Owosso, Michigan. Then to
Saginaw in 1923 when he was hand picked to manage Saginaw Furniture,
headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. John designed and built his home in
Golfside before purchasing his "Gentleman's Dariy" farm in James Twp.,
Saginaw Co. He founded first, Oil Well Service, Inc., and  John Neymeiyer
Oil Co., was an Honorary Member of the Smithsonian Institute of Arts.
He was a member of The Furniture Club of America.

Memories of Grandpa coming home from work, always dressed in a suit,
vest and tie with a hat. He was a dynamic businessman, managing his
furniture plant and when W.W. II arrived he geared this plant to fight in the
War effort. He bought and traded for property obtaining mineral rights and
proceeded to drill and even "hit" that rich black vein of oil on ocassion. We
could tell when this happened because when he drove into the driveway his
car had quite an oil smell.

Investing for his children and grandchildren's future was the ultimate as I, his
granddaughter Barbara, and my brother Gary traced his business dealings in
Oil & Gas ventures all across Michigan. Grandpa bought cottages for his
children and their children to enjoy. His most beloved purchase were the
boats he owned. First a 46 foot Chris Craft and then a few years later a 53
foot Chris Craft. Both boats were named after his wife and were called,
        Lurah M.

Allegan Co., died 07 Feb 1971, Kalamazoo, Michigan, buried: Kalamazoo,
        Michigan, Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park.
Leah and her husband Manley would come to visit quite often in Saginaw to
see her siblings, Lurah, Cale and Buster. I remember her as a little taller and
        thinner then my grandma Lurah.

She married Manley ELLIS, 24 Apr 1918, in Allegan Co., Michigan, born
19 Jun 1890, Sherman, Michigan, Wexford Co. Manley held a PhD in
Psychology and taught at Western University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In
old pictures from Saugatuck he is a coach of the woman's basketball team
in which his wife Leah and her sister Lurah were on.

Michigan. Samuel called "Cale" was the third born to David Samuel and
Erie Alice Petheram Reed. He first was employed by Nelson Brothers
and later worked for Saginaw Steering Gear.  Cale died very unexpectedly
at his cottage near Tawas City.

He married first, Helen Louise STEVENS, 06 Aug 1928, in Chicago,
Illinois, born 07 Sep 1903, Fennville, Michigan, Allegan Co., (daughter of
Richard STEVENS) died 25 Jun 1959, Saginaw Co., Michigan, buried:
         Oakwood Mausoleum, Saginaw, Michigan.
Helen was a beautiful redhead. She was an artist and did beautiful
paintings. Helen and Cale lived at 615 Ash St. in Saginaw in 1938. Helen's
father Frank Stevens was also an artist. Helen and Cale married in Chicago,
Illinois, where Helen attended the Chicago Art Institute and the Vogue
School of Arts. After marrying Helen and Cale moved directly to Saginaw,
Michigan. Helen grew to womanhood in Fennville, Michigan.

After Helen, his first wife, passed away he remarried Ruth Metzger.

First born to Lurah (Reed) and John Neymeiyer. Norma had a love for animals, all kinds, unmatched by anyone. She was truely devoted to her husband and family.

She and my mom, Alice, sisters, had both cut a special poem out of the paper and sent it to one another, each unknowing the other had done the very same thing. They did this a few months before Norma died, Alice to follow nine months later.

She married Robert Louis WESTWOOD, 1944?, in Saginaw Co., Michigan, born 19 Sep 1922, Saginaw Co., Michigan ?, occupation Riverside Furniture, died 19 Nov 1985, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Sebastion Co., buried: National Cemetery, Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Bob was Chief of Control at Riverside Furniture Co. Served in the US Navy during W.W. II.

Alice May was named after her Grandmother Erie Alice and Erie Alice's sister Alice May. Grandma Neymeiyer told me it was a family name.

She married Howard Melvin ("Tommie") THOMAS, 22 Jun 1946, in Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church, Saginaw, born 04 Jan 1924, Dayton, Tennessee., Rhea Co., (son of James Vance THOMAS and Sarah Elizabeth CRANE/CRAIN) occupation Genral Motors, retired 1990, died 01 May 1991, Saginaw, Co., buried: Saginaw Co., Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum, Saginaw Co., Michigan. Prior to working at General Motors, he worked at Saginaw Furniture, learning the fine art and craftmanship, from his father-in-law, John Neymeiyer, required in building some of the now classic furniture that Saginaw Furniture had manufactured. He worked also as a sales representative for the company.

Howard, Called Tommie, fourth child of James & Sarah (Crain) Thomas remembered his Aunt Martha helping to take care of him when his mom died in 1926. He was only two and a half years old at the time. He enlisted in the USMC 22 Sep 1941 @ San Francisco, CA. Stationed @ Kodiak, Alaska & with the 1st Marine Division, South Pacific Asiatic Pacific Area: 6 Jan 1944 - 8 Dec 1944; 25 Feb 1942 - 13 Feb 1943. Wounded in action, 14 Oct 1944. Participated in action against the enemy on Kwajaiein Atoll and Peleliu where he was wounded in action. Awarded The Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars.

Howard, "Tommie" and Alice met in Washington D.C. in Layfayette Park across the street from the White House. It was the day before W.W. II was announced the U.S. had won the war. But many in D.C. knew this before the official announcment. Dad got mom's phone number from her roommate he told me. At the time mom would not give it to dad and mom did not even talk to him much. Mom was working in the Pentagon as a Secretary and dad was healing from the last surgery on his left arm from wounds received in the South Pacific. He also recovering from Malaria. They lived in New York after they married, then back to Michigan when mom discovered she was going to have a baby. She had not wanted to bring up a child in the atmosphere of New York City and young aspiring actors. Dad had a portfolio of pictures made and was attending Columbia University while working at the Post Office. He was a stand in for Rock Hudson for a brief time in these early years. The aspiring actor and my mom decided to move back to Michigan to raise their family. So ends this chapter.

He and his wife, Gloria had three boys then adopted a daughter. Jack had a great love for boating as did all the Reeds and Neymeiyer's. Jack had burned his hand very badly on his mom's mangle, (presser) when he was little and had skin grafts done on it at his dad's insistence to save his hand. Attended Central Michigan University.
